We built the place we couldn't find.
In the suburbs, there were few — if any — organizations dedicated to nurturing and affirming Black youth. Families who wanted more connection, more representation, more opportunity for their children often had to travel outside their own communities to find it.
And even then, access wasn't guaranteed. Families who didn't meet income requirements or weren't part of the right networks were frequently left without options — their bright, capable kids overlooked.
Deidra O'Neal saw it clearly. She felt it. And when she couldn't find a place where these young people could belong, learn, and be inspired — she created one.
