Why Belonging Matters: How YBS Kids Is Building Pride and Creating Opportunity
Here is something every suburban parent of a Black child eventually figures out: great schools and safe neighborhoods do not automatically mean your child feels seen.
You can live in a beautiful community, send your kids to excellent schools, and still watch them search for faces that look like theirs in the room. You can drive past dozens of youth programs and still struggle to find one built with your child's experience in mind. The gap is real, and it is not about a lack of opportunity. It is about a lack of spaces where our young people feel fully understood, culturally affirmed, and empowered to grow.
That is exactly why YBS Kids exists.

From a Search to a Space
Back in 2019, I got tired of looking for the right community for my own kids and realizing it did not quite exist yet. So instead of waiting, I built it. YBS Kids - Young, Black, and Suburban Kids - was created to give middle and high school students a place where they do not have to shrink, explain themselves, or search for belonging. They can simply show up and be fully who they are.
Because when a young person feels like they belong, something powerful happens. They raise their hand. They try new things. They build friendships that last. They start believing in what is possible for their future. Belonging is not just a nice feeling. It is the foundation for everything else.
What We Do: Educate. Empower. Inspire.
We keep our work focused on three things that actually matter for real-world readiness.
Education and Life Skills
Classroom learning is important, but it does not cover everything young people need to step confidently into adulthood. Our students learn how to manage money, speak publicly, set real goals, make strong decisions, and handle themselves in professional spaces. They explore technology, health and wellness, personal safety, and what college and career readiness actually looks like when nobody is holding their hand through the process. These are skills that stick.
Cultural Enrichment
You cannot build a future you are proud of if you do not know where you come from. We connect our students with mentors, professionals, and community leaders who reflect their culture and their potential. We celebrate heritage, we affirm identity, and we show our young people that Black excellence is not just something they read about in history books. It is something they are living right now.
Community Involvement
Leadership is not about titles. It is about showing up for others. Through volunteer projects and local partnerships, our students learn responsibility, teamwork, and what it means to be a contributing member of their community. They learn they don't have to wait until they are grown to make a difference. They can start today.
Mentorship That Opens Doors
Sometimes it only takes one adult who sees something in a young person to change the trajectory of their life. Through workshops, guest speakers, and community connections, we expose our students to careers, scholarships, and networks they might never have encountered otherwise. We teach them how to write a resume, nail an interview, search for financial aid, and communicate like the professionals they are becoming.
We are not here to choose their path. We are here to make sure they have the tools, the confidence, and the network to choose their own.
Join the Village
When we invest in our young people, we strengthen our entire community. A confident, prepared student becomes an engaged citizen, a responsible professional, and a compassionate leader who gives back.
If you are a parent looking for a supportive, culturally affirming space for your child, we would love to welcome you.
If you want to volunteer, mentor, sponsor a student, support a workshop, or donate, there is a place for you here too. Our young people should never have to search for where they belong.
YBS Kids is that place.
